It's no secret that cold temperatures, wind, hats on the head and the friction of coats on the hair affect the health of our hair, making it dehydrated, weak and brittle! Just like our skin, our hair deserves a little more attention and care in winter to keep it healthy, shiny and soft!
Taking care of your hair in winter does not mean adding 10 new products to your routine to end up spending the day in the bathroom, no! At BKIND, we like minimalist routines made up of a few essentials that make all the difference. We much prefer to adjust a few lifestyle habits to preserve our beautiful hair. Here are 6 tips to take care of your hair in winter!
1. Avoid hot water on your hair
We are 100% in agreement that there is nothing better than a good hot shower in the winter, but we also agree that hot water on the hair is not ideal. It pulls out all the natural oils and dries out the hair and scalp. We therefore recommend that you wash your hair with lukewarm water and if you have the courage, finish with cold water on your hair to revitalize it and close the hair follicles!
2. Opt for natural care
The simple act of replacing cheap shampoo and conditioner with natural products free of silicones, sulfates and parabens can greatly improve the health of your hair, and not just in the winter! Take the time to look at the ingredient list of the products you want to buy and check that they do not contain these chemical and irritating ingredients. What we like to find in our shampoo and conditioner are moisturizing and nourishing ingredients such as cocoa, mango or shea butter, panthenol, Abyssinia oil and oat and wheat proteins.
Our shampoo and conditioner bars contain Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate and Behentrimonium Methosulfate respectively, ingredients not to be confused with Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)! Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate effectively cleans away dirt and oil, without drying the hair and scalp. It is plant-derived and safe for skin and hair due to its large molecular structure. Behentrimonium Methosulfate, also plant-derived, acts as a mild conditioner, moisturizer and a detangler to reduce static and frizz. It also promotes moisture retention.
3. Space out your hair washing days
Washing your hair frequently can alter the pH of the scalp which is directly linked to the health of your hair. So let your hair breathe between washes to let the natural oils hydrate your scalp.
Beauty tip: use the Bamboo hair brush, fitted with large natural wooden spikes, which help to revitalize the hair and distribute the natural oils produced by it throughout the hair.
4. Apply a moisturizing hair mask once or twice a week
Nothing better than applying a moisturizing mask to dry, dull and lifeless hair to revitalize it! Our Moisture and Nourish Hair Mask is formulated with a natural biolipid complex, which improves the overall appearance of hair, shea butter, wheat germ oil and macadamia oil to deeply hydrate hair to short and long term. It helps restore moisture to hair to leave it feeling revitalized, silky and shiny! Just apply it in the shower after shampooing and 10 minutes later your hair will be bursting with moisture! For a healthy scalp, try the Scalp Revival Exfoliating Mask with AHAs.
5. Limit the use of heat on your hair
Blow dryers, flat irons, curling irons and others are all useful for giving your hair a beautiful look, but they are largely responsible for dry and dull hair. Each time you use them, they dry out your hair a little more. If you are able to let your hair air dry and limit the irons, it is ideal to let your hair end up healthier! If you can't live without it, consider reducing the heat on your tools to limit the damage!
6. Protect your hair outdoors
Wind and cold temperatures can greatly affect the health of your hair! Although we want to show our beautiful hair, even in winter, it is better to protect it. Cover your hair with a tuque, a scarf or even a hood to protect from the cold and the wind, which can weaken your hair and make it brittle!
