Natural nail polish: does it exist?

Do you ever wonder if your nail polish is safe for you and for the environment? We all know that it contains a lot of chemicals, but where are those ingredients from? Are they vegan? One thing is for sure is that they can be toxic for you as well as being, for the most part, tested on animals.

Can Nail Polish be Natural?

Simple answer: No! No matter which nail polish you choose to buy, even if it is labeled as « Non-toxic » or « Vegan » nail polish is never natural. Chemicals are essential to its color as well as its texture. What you can try to look for are brands who use as little chemicals as possible. You might find nail polish marked with « 3-Free » which means that they are free of the three most toxic ingredients. Some nail polish can be 5-free, 7-free or even 10-free. The less chemicals there is, the safest is the nail polish.

Animal-derived Ingredients

Here are 3 ingredients often found in nail polish that, you might not know, comes from animals:

Guanine: this ingredient is derived from fish scales and some acids that are found in animal tissue. This is an ingredient usually use to create shimmer in your nail polish. Carmine, on the other hand, is sadly often use to create a red tint. It is obtained by crushing beetles and gives nail polish a rich color. Another ingredients that is usually found in nail polish is Oleic Acid. This is animal fat and it is used to thickening the solution.

To help you clean your drawer:

Here are some brands that still test on animals and/or use animal derived Ingredients

  • Essie
  • Maybeline
  • OPI
  • Sally Hansen

  • Yves Saint-Laurent
  • L’oreal

What does Non-Toxic means?

Non-Toxic means that it will be less harmful for your body. You might think that having nail polish on your nails is not that big of a deal; the truth is we use our fingers for a lot of different things such as eating and our nails come in contact with our mouth all the time. If you are trying to transition towards a healthier lifestyle, you should definitely try to switch to non-toxic nail polish. Even more so if you are pregnant or are in contact with children often. Chemicals in nail polish can be carcinogenic and can disrupt the endocrine system. So yes, nail polish will always be chemical, but it doesn’t have to hurt your health as much as it does now.
